“[Students] really connect to Judy as a kid who’s their age.…They really love how she’s so ambitious and, even though she’s only one person, she’s doing something to make a change in the world!” —Krista Gedney

Judy Moody might only be one kid—but she won’t let that stop her from making a difference. And neither should your students!
In this Teacher Share video, fourth grade teacher Krista Gedney from New Rochelle, New York, breaks down some of the many ways you can use the Book of the Week, Judy Moody Saves the World!, in your class to open up conversations about environmentalism, character relationships, and sequential writing, all while showing students the power that just one voice can have.
• Character Traits: Students can compare the different ways that Judy and Stink react to events. Judy’s reactions are usually big, whereas Stink’s are more calm. What are some examples throughout the text?
• Text-to-Self Connections: At one point in the story, Stink tells on Judy and she is sent to her room. Before reading about the outcome, students can make predictions about how Judy will respond, and then share how they’ve felt when they’ve been in Judy’s or Stink’s shoes.
• Sequential Writing: Students can write about how they might save the earth, planning out what they would do first, next, and last. It’s a great way to connect to environmentalism and practice key writing skills.
• Art Activities: Just like Judy Moody, students can design their own Crazy Strip bandages. Download a free printable “What’s on Your Crazy Strip?” describe-and-draw activity to help students make text-to-self connections and consider what they’re passionate about in Cooked Up from a Book.
• Social-Emotional Learning: Judy Moody is known for her big moods and reactions. Open up a conversation about how Judy reacts and how your students react in similar situations. Discuss that it’s okay to make mistakes and that we’re all always learning!
