Cooked Up From A Book

Activity: “Sincerely, from Me”

Inspired by Beverly Cleary’s Dear Mr. Henshaw

JNB-DearMrHenshaw-CUFAB-Hero

If your students could write a letter to anyone, who would it be?

After your students read Beverly Cleary’s Dear Mr. Henshaw, download this free printable “Sincerely, from Me” activity and have them write a letter to someone they want to know more about. Students can ask their person three questions and explain why they want to know.

Teacher Tip

You can encourage students to write to someone who they’ve lost touch with. Watch fifth grade teacher Colby Sharp’s Book Talks video for more information on this approach (and for more ideas on using Dear Mr. Henshaw in your classroom).

How did your students’ letters turn out? If you’re able, please share them with the Scholastic Book Clubs community on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #ScholasticBookClubs.

A Note from Judy

What’s the recipe for a perfect read-aloud? A pinch of perseverance and a dollop of fun! The Book of the Week is Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao written by Kat Zhang and illustrated by Charlene Chua.

Join the Book Boys as they learn how to make their own bao in an original music video; watch an exclusive interview with author Kat Zhang in Behind the Scenes; discover how one teacher uses Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao in her classroom in Book Talks; and download a free printable “My Perfect Recipe” sequencing activity in Cooked Up from a Book.

We hope that Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao inspires you and your students to never give up on trying something new, because practice makes perfect!
