Cooked Up From A Book

Activity: “What Makes a Friend?”

What Are the Qualities of a Good Friend? (Inspired by Finding a Friend)

CUFAB-FindingAFriend-Hero

Like Deep Blue and Cushy in Finding a Friend, best friends are something to be treasured!

Encourage your students to celebrate the friendships in their lives with this downloadable “What Makes a Friend?” acrostic poem activity. Students can make an acrostic poem using the word “FRIEND” to describe what qualities make a friend the best.

Teacher Tip

Help inspire creativity: Prompt students to think about what activities they might do with a best friend!

This activity is inspired by literacy specialist Megan Polk from Nashville, Tennessee. Discover other ways you can use Finding a Friend with readers of all ages in her Book Talks teacher review video.

How did your students’ acrostic poems turn out? If you’re able, please share their work with the Scholastic Book Clubs community on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #ScholasticBookClubs.

A Note from Judy

Dragons are huge fans of tacos—as long as they don’t have one secret, spicy ingredient! The Book of the Week is the laugh-out-loud, fun-to-read-together picture book Dragons Love Tacos, written by Adam Rubin and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri!

Dance to an original song with the Book Boys; discover the many ways that one first grade teacher uses Dragons Love Tacos with her students in Book Talks; read an exclusive interview with Adam Rubin in Behind the Scenes; and download a free printable “Dragons Love My Tacos!” recipe activity in Cooked Up from a Book that also helps students practice sequencing.

We hope that your younger readers have a blast with Dragons Love Tacos—and remember: no salsa!
