3-Minute Teacher Review Video About Misunderstandings and Learning to Forgive
by Tatiana Florival
“I did a read-aloud while [the students] all gathered around the rug and listened.…They have laughed, they were upset one minute, they were mad the next minute, but they were all very happy towards the end of the story” —Tamika Mitchell-Wilcher
A story that’s ultimately about misunderstandings and learning to forgive, Potato Pants! by Laurie Keller is an off-the-wall-funny picture book featuring a potato who is desperate to find his perfect pair of pants at Lance Vance’s Fancy Pants Store, but then an eggplant gets in his way!
In this video, first grade teacher Tamika Mitchell-Wilcher from Mitchell County Primary School in Camilla, Georgia, shares some of the fun activities she uses in her classroom with Potato Pants!, including:
• Creating Graphic Organizers: Students can use a graphic organizer to write or draw out the characters, setting, problem, and solution from the story
• Story-Retelling Activity: Tamika has her students pair up to retell the beginning, middle, and end of the tale
• Searching for Words: Tamika creates a fun word-search activity using adjectives from the book, such as big, small, and scratchy
• Arts and Crafts Activity: Let students create their own fancy pants by drawing and coloring on a cutout pants stencil
