Teacher Review: The Mitten

3-Minute Video About Using Jan Brett’s Bestselling Classic in Your Classroom

by Tatiana Florival

Teacher’s Takeaway

“The Mitten is such a wonderful story that can be used in the classroom to just fall in love with reading! But it can also be a great anchor to support teaching your literacy strategies.” —Tiffany Williams

Tiffany Williams, a library media specialist at Louise Durham Elementary in Mena, Arkansas, says that her students love all things Jan Brett.

Tiffany believes that—from its origins as a Ukrainian folktale to its surprise ending—Jan Brett’s The Mitten presents exciting ways for students to experience the joy of reading and practice critical thinking. She suggests using The Mitten as an anchor text in classroom activities, including:

• Retelling and sequencing with picture cards

• Engaging students in book talks (check out this week’s Cooked Up from a Book for a free downloadable activity inspired by Tiffany!)

• Making predictions through turn-and-talks

Tiffany shared her strategies; now please share yours! How are you using The Mitten in your classroom? The Scholastic Book Clubs community would love to hear from you: please post on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #ScholasticBookClubs.

A Note from Judy

Making new friends can be as easy as sharing a cookie! The Book of the Week–If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff, illustrated by Felicia Bond—shows all the possibilities of befriending a mouse that overstays its welcome.

This week, have fun guessing what the Book Boys will ask for next; watch an exclusive interview with the book’s author, Laura Numeroff, in Behind the Scenes; learn how a teacher uses If You Give a Mouse a Cookie to engage her students in Book Talks; and download a free sequencing activity in this week’s Cooked Up from a Book!

We hope this tale of a boy and a mouse will make your students laugh and learn about the importance of setting boundaries and sharing.
