Cause and Effect: Comparing Judy and Stink!

Free Downloadable Discussion Guide and Activity Inspired by Judy Moody Was in a Mood and Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid

by Alana Pedalino

Judy Moody and Stink might be siblings—but that doesn’t mean they’re anything alike. At least, that’s what they would tell you!

Whether you read Judy Moody Was in a Mood or Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid, you’ll probably agree that the characters seem to butt heads quite often. Is it because of all their differences? Using this free downloadable discussion guide, you can help your students think about specifically why and how Judy and Stink are so different (and similar)—as well as what that means for the world around them.

To help students practice thinking about cause and effect and drawing connections to the text, try asking them questions such as:

• What effects do Judy’s moods have on others?

• How does Judy and Stink’s relationship cause tension?

• If you were in Stink’s or Judy’s shoes, would you react the same way as they do to each other?

Then help your class visualize the lesson with a free printable cause-and-effect activity. Download the worksheet here:

How did your students’ activity sheets turn out? We’d love to hear from you! If you’re able, please share with us and other Scholastic Book Clubs teachers on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #ScholasticBookClubs.
