Class Activity: Drawing and Creative Writing

Free Downloadable Draw, Color, and Describe Activity Inspired by Dragons in a Bag

by Alana Pedalino

Dragon-class-activity-CUFAB-hero

In Dragons in a Bag, Jax helps care for three baby dragons that are—you guessed it—in a bag!

After reading the Book of the Week with your class, encourage your students to express their creativity by imagining that they were in Jax’s shoes with this fun and free draw, color, and describe activity.

Ask students to draw and color baby dragons inside their bags, then write a little bit about them—are their dragons covered in scales? Do they breathe fire or have special powers? Download the printable activity here:

This activity is wonderful for helping students to:

•
Engage their imaginations

•
Make text-to-self connections

•
Practice creative writing

How did your students’ drawings turn out? We would love to see! If you’re able, please share with us and other Scholastic Book Clubs teachers on Facebook and Instagram by using the hashtag #ScholasticBookClubs.

A Note from Judy

This week, your students can get to know a very special class hamster with the Book of the Week, The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. Heads up: it’s going to be fun-fun-fun!

Imagine taking Humphrey into your home with the Book Boys; discover how one fourth grade teacher uses The World According to Humphrey to teach different points of view in Book Talks; watch an exclusive interview with author Betty G. Birney in Behind the Scenes; and download a free printable activity and discussion guide in Cooked Up from a Book.

We hope that you and your students enjoy The World According to Humphrey!
