A Kid-Friendly Video About the Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King Award–Winning Picture Book
by Traci Swain
Before diving into Last Stop on Market Street, make the Book Boys your first stop on the Scholastic Book Clubs blog!
Max, Allister, and Elliott had a blast with the blog resources this week. Play this video for your students, and they’ll watch:
• Max design his own story map to practice finding an author’s purpose, sequencing, and visualization based on the advice from teacher Barbara Garibaldi
• Allister focus on his five senses in a printable draw-and-describe activity that helps him notice all the things around him that he can see, smell, hear, taste, and touch
• Elliott share his favorite takeaways from an amazing 11-minute exclusive interview with Last Stop on Market Street cocreators Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson
At the end of the video, the Book Boys come together to reflect upon the routes they walked as kids—just like CJ does on his journey from his church to the soup kitchen. Have your students try this too! This exercise helps them notice details, practice gratitude, and think critically.
The Book Boys work in different departments at Scholastic Book Clubs. They decided to form a group to share a wide range of books and introduce students to the world of reading. Each week, the Book Boys select a book to feature. They make stories come alive by creating fun, educational, and engaging videos for teachers and families to use in the classroom or at home—and to help kids connect with stories, get them excited about reading, and help them declare “I am a reader.”
