Kick Off Your Character Study
by Traci Swain
Start your character study unit with Doctor De Soto by William Steig. Watch this Scholastic Book Clubs–exclusive teacher review video to discover why the National Book Award–winning picture book is great for introducing kids to dynamic characters.
When your students begin taking a closer look at characters in stories, have them consider the problem-solving mouse dentist Doctor De Soto!
At Private Nicholas Minue School in Carteret, New Jersey, second grade teacher Leana Malinowsky loves using Doctor De Soto in a reader’s workshop model to kick off a unit on character study. She finds that the vivid facial expressions in the illustrations, as well as story elements such as sequencing and dialogue, help her students make inferences about the characters’ feelings and what they might do next.
Watch Leana’s video review for inspiration on how you can create a lesson plan based on Doctor De Soto.
