Tracking Character Development and Theme
by Traci Swain
Learn how a literacy coach uses Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick to help her students track character development and theme over the course of the story in this Scholastic Book Clubs–exclusive teacher review video.
Staying “on track” while reading for themes and character development is a lot more fun with colorful sticky notes!
Literacy coach Dr. Tracy Zambelli from James H. Vernon School in East Norwich, New York, loves using Freak the Mighty with her students to help them practice in-depth story analysis. One technique they use to track themes or character growth is to utilize sticky notes as they read, then transfer the sticky notes to a T-Chart for comparison.
In this video, Dr. Zambelli reviews how the quirky characters in Freak the Mighty bring complicated themes to life.
