Classroom Activity: The Very Impatient Caterpillar

Becoming a Butterfly

by Alana Pedalino

Caterpillar-class-activity-Hero-CUFAB

Help your students identify the life cycle of a butterfly in this fun, creative, and colorful downloadable classroom activity inspired by The Very Impatient Caterpillar by Ross Burach!

Some of the best learning experiences happen when we’re so busy laughing that we don’t realize there’s a lesson involved. Students may think they are only giggling at what happens in The Very Impatient Caterpillar, but in fact, they are also learning-while-they-laugh about the life cycle of a butterfly.

After reading The Very Impatient Caterpillar aloud, try this free printable activity to encourage students to review their new scientific knowledge and identify and draw the four stages of a butterfly’s life cycle as it undergoes metamorphosis.

Teacher Tip

Using the book as an example, students can also illustrate their caterpillars’ facial expressions and activities as they wait to become a butterfly. This social-emotional addition to the activity helps students consider emotions!
