Create Your Own Dictionary!
by Tatiana Florival and Hisami Aoki
Encourage your students to expand their vocabularies with this fun “Create Your Own Dictionary” classroom activity based on Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick.
Kevin (aka “Freak”) has a great vocabulary. He loves learning new words and sharing them with Max. In fact, you can find all of his favorite words in a special dictionary at the back of Freak the Mighty!
In this engaging vocabulary-building activity, have students create their own dictionaries. They can add whatever words they choose: words they learn while reading Freak the Mighty, their own favorite words, or words they use a lot in daily life. Students can also invent new definitions for existing words—just like Freak does.

After creating their own dictionaries, students can keep them up-to-date throughout the year by adding new entries as they read and encounter exciting new words!
