A Celebration of Nature
by Traci Swain
Watch this Scholastic Book Clubs–exclusive teacher review of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen for creative ways to use the Newbery Honor–winning survival novel in your classroom.
When Scott Hebenstreit was an 11-year-old Boy Scout, Hatchet was one of his all-time favorite books. And now he loves sharing it with his sixth grade students at Auten Road Intermediate School in Hillsborough, New Jersey.
When discussing Hatchet in the classroom, Scott encourages his students to view the novel as a celebration of nature. Scott also believes Hatchet presents a unique way to help students who may be going through some struggles similar to Brian.
What lessons and themes do you teach using Hatchet? We’d love to hear from you! Please share with us and other teachers using the hashtag #ScholasticBookClubs.
