What’s Your Bedtime Routine?
by Traci Swain and Alana Pedalino
Have kids draw what they need for a good bedtime routine while exercising critical-thinking skills with this activity inspired by Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama Red Pajama.
Every child needs the comfort of a bedtime routine. That’s why we’ve decided to bring Llama Llama Red Pajama back as the Book of the Week: to celebrate Scholastic Book Clubs’ decade-long partnership with Pajama Program—which provides brand-new pajamas and books to children who are facing uncertainty all across the country—and to feature Pajama Program’s mission, which we think is more important than ever during these uncertain times.
Llama Llama Red Pajama perfectly illustrates the benefits of Pajama Program’s mission. Little Llama had a really hard time going to sleep, but with a consistent, comforting bedtime routine, he was reassured that everything would be okay.
The story highlights the connection between child and caregiver and reinforces Pajama Program’s Good Night Bill of Rights: Every child has the right to a sense of stability and security, the right to a comforting bedtime routine, and to enjoy cozy pajamas and a bedtime story to inspire their imagination.
For this fun, creative activity, start by getting your kids to think about what they need to establish a comfortable and nurturing bedtime routine. Then download this free ready-to-use worksheet for home or school. No worries if you don’t have a printer—so long as your kids have drawing and coloring tools and a sheet of blank paper, they can complete this activity in any learning environment.
For more, check out this video featuring developmental psychologist Carol Ripple’s discussion of Llama Llama Red Pajama and the importance of a consistent bedtime routine.
As Carol says: “When kids get the sleep they need, they can thrive the next day—and every day.” We hope you read Llama Llama Red Pajama aloud to the special kids in your life and enjoy sharing this installment of the Llama Llama series with them!
