It’s Time for Icky Bug Bingo!
by Hisami Aoki and Alana Pedalino
Here’s a fun game to go along with The Icky Bug Alphabet Book! Download and print these free Icky Bug Bingo cards to help students practice their letters and engage with the text.
“Icky Bug BINGO” means you win! Your students will “bug out” when they play this free classroom activity to help them practice their letters.
How to Play Icky Bug Bingo
Icky Bug Bingo is just like regular bingo—except instead of a bingo card filled with numbers, your students’ cards are filled with letters of the alphabet. As you read The Icky Bug Alphabet Book aloud, students will listen for the names of the bugs and see if their card has the first letter of the bug’s name.
Read on for more detailed instructions!
1. Download and print your free Icky Bug Bingo cards.
Distribute the cards and find objects that can serve as marker tokens in your classroom—buttons, erasers, or even scraps of paper!
2. Read The Icky Bug Alphabet Book out loud and encourage students to listen closely. When they hear the name of a big that begins with one of the letters on their card, they should put a token marker on that space. For example, if they hear “bee,” they can mark a B space on their card.
3. When a student has placed markers on three connected spaces (in a row, column, or diagonal), the student yells “Icky Bug Bingo” to win!
For a longer round of Icky Bug Bingo, you can change up the rules! Instead of winning by marking a complete row, column, or diagonal on their bingo card, you can play so that the winner must mark every space on their card.
Here’s a fun video of the kids in Beth Narkiewicz’s kindergarten class at McKenzie Elementary in East Rutherford, New Jersey, playing a rousing game of Icky Bug Bingo. Check it out with your own class!
