Classroom Activity: Contest Inspired by The Word Collector
Word up! Don’t miss this chance to win a classroom reading-corner makeover while inspiring your students to read and create.
If we learned anything from this week’s Dollar Deal, The Word Collector, it’s that words are incredibly powerful. Words empower people to express their dreams and ideas. Words allow us to learn more deeply from one another.
Inspired by Peter Reynolds’s New York Times–bestselling picture book, the Scholastic Book Clubs exclusive Word Collector Classroom Contest offers you a chance to create your own unique dream reading corner in your classroom!
Here’s how to enter:
1. Just like Jerome in The Word Collector, your students have thousands of “feeling words” to help express their emotions. Help your students pick their favorite feeling words.
2. On 8 ½" x 11" paper, have each student illustrate a word so that it looks like the word’s meaning. (Check out some examples below, courtesy of Scholastic Book Clubs designer Jude Dahill and Ryan C., a first grade student from Canton, Massachusetts!)
3. Create your class entry by collecting your students’ illustrations, then mail it in to the address below for a chance to win!
One Grand-Prize Winner will receive a reading corner makeover! Transform a section of your classroom into an official Word Collector Class Corner—including bookshelves, a listening library, signed books, and an original work of art by Peter Reynolds.
TEN Runners-Up will receive a signed Peter Reynolds book collection. The winning entries will also be featured on the Scholastic Book Clubs contest page and on social media.
Please make sure we receive your entry by February 15, 2019.
