Classroom Activity Inspired by Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
by Traci Swain
“When the townspeople went outside, they carried their plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons and knives and napkins with them. That way they would always be prepared for any kind of weather.”
—From Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
The weather in the town of Chewandswallow can be unpredictable. Who knows what goodies might fall from the sky?!
After reading Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, we thought it would be a blast to imagine what it would be like to be a meteorologist in Chewandswallow, preparing the citizens for whatever Mother Nature threw their way. So we made our very own Chewandswallow town weather forecast—marshmallows, spaghetti, and gummy bears included!
Here’s how we did it:
We enlisted the help of kids in Ms. Zapata and Mr. Castro’s first grade class at PS 83 in New York City:
They gathered their supplies:
• Dry pasta (macaroni and spaghetti)
• Gummy bears
• Gummy worms
• Goldfish crackers
They made their weather charts:
(For this step, all you have to do is put equal-size squares on pieces of paper and label them with days of the week, just like in the picture above. You can draw the squares or use construction paper!)
And then the kids imagined their own wild weather forecasts, just like in the book! Here’s how some of them turned out:
And there you have it! We can’t wait to see your classroom’s creations. Please be sure to share your artwork on social media using the hashtag #ScholasticBookClubs.
