Learning About Self-Control with No, David!

Classroom Activity Inspired by the Beloved Classic

by Alana Pedalino

David Shannon’s kid-favorite picture book reflects on some of his most rambunctious childhood moments. It reminds growing readers that even though we sometimes make mistakes, the adults in our lives will always love us.

Celebrate No, David!’s 20th book birthday with your students by encouraging them to explore how self-control relates to their own lives with this fun class activity. You can download the worksheet below.

We asked the students in Karen Breitbart’s kindergarten class at Imagine Charter School in Weston, Florida, to try out the worksheet. Here’s what they came up with!

A Note from Judy

Important lesson of the week: Never be afraid to be your own unique, quirky, and spectacular self! So grab a class set of this week’s Dollar Deal, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, and celebrate what makes each of your students stand out.

Tune in as the Book Boys share their “Stargirl qualities”—then let students discover their own with this fun classroom activity; hear how a teacher and student imagine having Stargirl in their school; and catch a behind-the-scenes interview with Jerry Spinelli himself.

We hope you and your students enjoy Stargirl and that it encourages your class to be proud of what makes each person special!
