Meet the Creator of No, David!
by Alexie Basil
We may be celebrating No, David!’s 20th book birthday, but did you know that David Shannon wrote the first draft of the classroom favorite even longer ago, when he was still just a kid? Back then, no and David were two of the only words he knew how to spell!
As you may be able to guess from the title and author’s name, No, David! is a semi-autobiographical account of the adventures of an energetic (and mischief-making) young boy. In this exclusive author interview, David Shannon shares how his mother found the original draft and gave it to him when he was an adult!
Share the video above with your students and listen together as David reveals how he turned his memory from childhood into a laugh-out-loud, heartwarming classic of children’s literature that every fun-loving kid—and parent—can relate to.
David Shannon is a kid-favorite author and illustrator who has been drawing ever since he could hold a crayon. Much like his namesake in the classic No, David!, David kept himself occupied as a child by drawing murals on the walls. After studying illustration at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, David became an editorial cartoonist for major magazines and newspapers, including Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Time, and the New York Times. Today, he has written and illustrated more than 35 children’s books and lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Heidi, and their daughter, Emma.
