by Alexie Basil
When Luna was a baby, she was abandoned in the woods as an offering to appease an evil witch. Instead, Xan rescues her and gives a wonderful gift that is also a curse: extraordinary magical powers.
Fifth grade teacher Natasha Smith describes The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill as “fascinating” and an “awesome” read for middle school fantasy fans. In her classroom, students created 3-D dioramas depicting scenes from the critically acclaimed novel. They then participated in a “readers’ theater,” in which they wrote about and discussed what took place in their chosen scenes. Watch her review to learn more and see if this activity would be a good fit for your classroom!
